1. Ashima (above - girl) needs a family!  She continues to make great progress!

24-month-old little girl with special needs.  She was born after 36 weeks of gestation with severe birth asphyxia and sepsis with thrombocytopenia.  She was treated by a highly specialized therapist and support group with early intervention, neuro-development therapy, and sensory integration.  The developmental milestones achieved by 13 months are as follows:  social smile and eye contact (6 months), neck holding - prone and supine (9 months), and turns over on side (10 months). She appears to recognize her close caregivers, though she has no vocalization.  She is not able to sit up with support.

As of April 9, 2008:  Ashima is getting stronger. She can roll over many times from one end of the room to another. She can sit with support. She is more secure now and smiles a lot. There is a sound coming from her chest which doctors are not concerned about. She is 2 years old and is not talking or saying anything other than sounds. Doctors feel confident that she can make more progress with occupational therapy.

5. Heena (girl) needs a family!  New photo posted!

Heena, healthy female child, was born on February 19, 1996 to a Muslim couple who already had one daughter. As they were not on good terms, the wife wanted to go abroad and therefore handed over her newborn baby to the Shishu Mandir orphanage. She assured the orphanage that she would come back for Heena in two years, but she never came back. As Heena was a beautiful baby and later charming young child, there were many requests from families within India who wanted to adopt her. The staff at Shishu Mandir would not allow her to be adopted because they trusted her mother’s word that she would come back. After seven (7) years with no word from her mother, Shishu Mandir went about the process with the government to free Heena for adoption. At nine (9) years old, Heena was placed for adoption with a couple in Bangalore, but she was not ready to leave Shishu Mandir, so they brought her back. Over the course of the last year, Heena has expressed great desire to be adopted again. The staff at Shishu Mandir strongly believes that Heena is ready to be adopted at this time and that adoption is in her best interest.

Heena is healthy, intelligent, social, responsible, charming and strong-willed. She is presently attending the 7th grade in the school at Shishu Mandir, and she is doing very well. Heena speaks English, as this is the language used to teach the children there.
