Why do I need to prepare myself to adopt?

by Kent Brand

Good question. It seems like many who produce children by birth in society do not prepare themselves. It doesn't seem fair. And it isn't. The state, US government, and other National governments insist on standards to protect children because there have been so many abuses of children in child welfare. And this is the right thing to do for children who cannot protect themselves.

Most of the horror stories that you read about in adoption resulted from people who had not prepared themselves well for adoption. My conviction is like the old saying, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Imagine yourself as a child who has no family and needs a loving, adoptive family. Would you rather be adopted by a family who has had no preparation or a family who is well prepared (considering everything else is equal)? The answer is obvious.

At HOPE for Children we have deep convictions about families being well prepared for the adventures of their adoption journey. "Expect the unexpected" is a great motto as you face the realities of adoption and pray for the best.
